Doesn’t that new blacktop look nice? It creates a sharp contrast with the green lawn. Yes, you’re proud of your brand-new asphalt driveway, but it can’t look this good for long unless you add in a few maintenance steps to take care of it.
The Ft. Lauderdale expert paving team at Sunshine Services recommends the following tips for keeping your asphalt surface looking beautiful for years to come.
- Keep Weight Off New Asphalt
In the first two weeks of curing you’ll need to be extremely cautious about parking your vehicles on the asphalt.
- No Big Vehicles During the First Season
Until your asphalt is fully set, you shouldn’t allow any large trucks, RVs, boats, etc. onto the surface.
- Keep Your Asphalt Clean
Dirt and sand can be abrasive to asphalt and introduce more harmful oils and agents. Sweep and rinse you blacktop driveway often.
- Prevent and Quickly Clean Oil and Gas Spills
Oil, gasoline, anti-freeze, and other vehicle fluids can quickly dissolve the binding agents in asphalt. Soak up spills quickly with kitty litter (and try to avoid them in the first place.)
- Fill in Cracks ASAP
Repair problems as soon as you notice them to prevent them from getting any bigger.
- Sealcoat Your Asphalt Every Few Years
Whether you do it yourself or call in our team for help, sealcoating is critical to protecting your asphalt from sun, water, and wear.
- Avoid Driving on the Sides of Your Asphalt Surface
The sides of the asphalt will easily crumble under stress. Once the surface is completely cured, you can reinforce the edges by packing topsoil around them.
